NorthWest Grape Foundation Service

How to Get Selections into the NorthWest Grape Foundation Service Vineyard

Selections entering into the NorthWest Grape Foundation Service vineyard will be either in the ‘Public’ or ‘Private’ sector.  All selections that enter into the vineyard will satisfy Foundation Service certification requirements.

‘Public’ selections must go through the following acquisition process before being included in the program:

  1. Request for inclusion of a variety/clone must be submitted in writing to the Foundation Service by September 15,  annually.
  2. The Foundation Service then presents requests to a selection committee of Northwest industry members for approval or rejection.
  3. Selections meeting Foundation selection committee approval are then acquired and introduced into the Foundation vineyard once phytosanitary requirements are met.

Requests for inclusion of grape selections into the Foundation Service vineyard are open to all who wish to make one, but it is possible that not all requests will meet selection committee approval for inclusion.  Funding for ‘Public’ selections will come from sales, grants, gifts, and nursery assessments.

‘Private’ selections can also be included in the NorthWest Grape Foundation Service vineyard. Inclusion of ‘Private’ selections is subject only to the availability of foundation vineyard space.  Like with ‘Public’ selections, ‘Private’ selections must be requested for inclusion in writing to the Foundation Service but can be made at any time during the year.  Introduction and operational funding for ‘Private’ selections is the sole responsibility of the sponsor.  Once included in the foundation vineyard ‘Private’ selections are available only to the sponsor and designated recipients.  The current cost for inclusion is $3500.00 for disease testing and elimination treatments that will bring the selection to foundation level status as required by Washington State Administrative Code Chapter 16-462.  If the selection is maintained in the foundation vineyard there is an additional annual maintenance fee of $150.00 for the term of the five year contract which is renewable.  To submit a request for inclusion into the NorthWest Grape Foundation Service vineyard the following information must be provided:  The TTB approved prime name and clonal number if known, synonym name if known, and whether it is to be a ‘Public’ selection or a ‘Private’ selection.
